Sport in India faces several challenges. If we have to build a system that works consistently then we need to address the deficiencies. So, what problems does an interested athlete face in our country?
Sport has always been an after-thought in our education system. Most parents see sport as a distraction away from academics. At ASF we have taken this head on by starting a school that integrates sport with academics and puts it on an equal footing in our education.
No clear ‘path’ or structure exists in the country for talented athletes to be recognized. It is therefore pure chance that allows talent to rise. At ASF we have constituted a Talent Scouting Board, comprising of well-established coaches across the country. We also plan to have a unique program of working with schools to identify talent at an early age.
The science of sport has gone to levels where shaving off a hundredth of a second is the difference between the best and the second best. In India our trainers are not world-class because they do not possess this knowledge. It is our intention at ASF to bring in state-of-th-art knowledge about the science of performance and use technology to enhance performance.
There is a dearth of high-quality infrastructure in the country. It is, along with the science of performance, the two pillars on which an athlete constantly scales the bar of performance. We at ASF plan to provide the athlete with infrastructure that is on par with the best universities in the world.
Each athlete’s development is unique. Some bloom late while some gallop early and then settle at a level. But this is never given any attention. At ASF we believe it is this is crucial that the increasing levels of performance be managed to dovetail with the athlete’s abilities. Life-Cycle management will form an integral part of our system.
Many a times an athlete performs well at the National level or even the Olympics but falls along the wayside and does not scale that performance. There are several reasons for this. At ASF we plan to address this by ensuring that there is adequate psychological counseling and follow-up to keep the interest alive and build on the performances.
