Individual brilliance to the fore at the 4th edition of the Master’s Cup
Stars were born at the fourth edition of the Master’s Cup, boys U-18 hockey tournament which was held from Dec 5 to 7, 2019 at the Ponnampet hockey astroturf ground. This year was an expanded version with 4 more teams participating over last year. Out of the 12 teams that competed, 11 were from Coorg district and one from Mysore. This knockout tournament saw some standout performances with Vidyaniketan PU College and KALS (Karaumbiah's Academy for Learning & Sports) reaching the finals. Vidyaniketan played a strategically sound game to emerge winners by 2-1.
The Master’s Cup is Coorg’s only prize money tournament for youth where the winner’s get Rs. 30,000 and the runners-up get Rs. 20,000. Best individual players get Rs. 3,000 each. The Master’s Cup was created by Datha Karaumbiah, Chairman of KALS, in memory of his father M. N. Karaumbiah, also known as Jackie Master.
The final of the tournament was witnessed by hundreds vociferous children egging their teams on. The atmosphere was electric and was made even more special with the attendance of our Chief Guest Dr. Kishore Gopinathan Regional Director, Sports Authority of India as well as Mr. B.J. Cariappa, Indian Junior Men’s hockey coach, Col. B.K. Subramani, Olympian and Mr. Kuttanda Poonacha, former International hockey player.
The following individuals were awarded ‘Best Player’ under the various categories:
Best Striker: Kushalappa K. D. from KALS
Best Mid-fielder: Pratheek P. N. from Vidyaniketan
Best Defender: Pratheek Kushalappa from KALS
Best Goalkeeper: Kavin Subbaiah from Vidyaniketan
