Shri Vijay Goel, MoS of Youth Affairs & Sports inaugurates the ASF SAI Athletics Centre in Coorg.

ASF gets a shot in the arm to train a whole new quality of athletes to make them world-ready.

January 8, 2017, Gonikoppal, Coorg: It was a red-letter day at for the Ashwini’s Sports Foundation (ASF) as Shri Vijay Goel, Minister of State of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India inaugurated the 8-lane synthetic track in partnership with the Sports Authority of India (SAI)at the ASF Arena in Gonikoppal in South Coorg. Also present at the inauguration were Shri Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, Shri Shyam Sundar Regional Director, SAI and Ashwini Nachappa, Arjuna Awardee, Olympian and member of the governing council of SAI.

The international standard track will be used to train athletes who are part of the ASF program as well as host camps for national athletes who are part of SAI. At the moment, there are 8 ASF athletes with around 20 potential athletes from KALS, the school that is based on the same campus. More than 10 ASF athletes over the past three years have represented Karnataka at the junior national level. This new track provides ample opportunity not just for athletes in Coorg, for whom this is a great boon given that this is the only track in the district, but also for talented athletes across the country.

The intent of ASF is to create a model that allows for the consistent nurturing of world-class athletes without having the need to train abroad. The four step ASF model includes 1. Identification of right talent, 2. Nurturing of right talent through training built around state-of-the-art science of performance and infrastructure, 3. Completion of College education and 3. Management of the Life Cycle of each athlete.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Vijay Goel said “I feel very happy to have come here, this is my first visit to the district. Sport cannot be run only by the government. It has to be driven by culture that starts in schools in colleges. We (through SAI) have invested Rs. 5.5 crore for the project. After seeing the track I’m very pleased with the facilities. I hope more such state-of-art facilities come up across the country. I congratulate Ashwini Nachappa on the fine effort.”

Shri Pramod Madhwaraj speaking with much enthusiasm about the role of sports development in Karnataka said, “It is important for private entities to contribute to sport in a big way. I am very happy that Government of Karnataka has given Rs. 1 cr. to this. After seeing this facility, I will plead with the CM, that Ashwini Nachappa be given whatever she asks for the development of sport. The students are lucky to have this level of educational and sporting infrastructure which I believe is one of the best in the country.”

The ASF Arena is spread over 28 acres which also includes KALS, a school where sports and academics are given the same importance. Said Ashwini Nachappa, Founder ASF, “The world has galloped ahead in infrastructure and training methods. Performance today has become a highly-evolved science and it is our intent at ASF that we catch up with the world on the both the fronts. I am extremely thankful to the Government of India, that of Karnataka as well as to the Sports Authority of India for supporting the building of this track. It was wonderful that Shri Vijay Goel and Shri Pramod Madhwaraj agreed to inaugurate the track. We at ASF really appreciate this gesture.”

About ASF

Ashwini’s Sports Foundation (ASF) was set up in 2010 to nurture talented athletes in the areas of Track and Field and Hockey. In both these sporting disciplines India has been lagging behind and it is ASF’s intent to create a replicable ecosystem that is able to unearth right talent and groom athletes to be consistently on par with the rest of the world. With this in mind, ASF has built a world-class facility at the The ASF Arena in Gonikoppal, Coorg, which includes a 400m, 8-lane international standard synthetic, a 6-lane swimming pool at the Biocon ASF Aquatic Centre, the 10m pistol Embassy Shooting Range and Gymnasium and other facilities. An astro-turf is being planned for the existing turf hockey ground.

Core to achieving its intent is the ASF System. This is a 4-step process which includes;

  1. Talent Identification across the country
  2. The ASF Edge training program that incorporates the best in the science of sports
  3. Completion of education through a graduate program
  4. Management of Life Cycle of each athlete

ASF has 3 core programs that enable talented athletes to benefit from the ASF System. Through its ‘Nurture’ program, ASF identifies talent at an early age and provides children with quality education at the Karaumbiah’s Academy for Learning & Sport, which is an ICSE school from KG to 12th grade. The ‘Catalyst’ program is for coaches and talented children from other schools. An ‘Advanced’ program provides well established athletes at the national and international level with a world-class training program.

ASF is a non-profit organization.
